Work in progress

Another interesting note is that the 315 was dead during the whole shoot. Fake smoke was made in the smokebox and the locomotive was pushed by one of the US Army diesels that were being tested on the Grande. (I believe it was 4700N)The diesel was disguised in a wooden baggage car shell, and it was covered up all the way above the trucks. There are some great scenes of the train and the "Rockwood Tunnel" on the DVD "'50s Memories of the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge" from Green Frog.

Filming Locations

  • Ignacio, CO - The depot was painted red/white/blue and named "Fort Kearney"
  • Rockwood, CO - The "tunnel" was actually the big cut at Rockwood. The movie crew built a canopy over the top of the cut and created a fake rock wall over the top of the tracks.
