San Luis & Rio Grande Equipment San Luis & Rio Grande News Items SL&RG 18 & 20 - The Trip From Oregon Loading 18 & 20 in Hood River, OR

SL&RG 18 & 20 were purchased from Brian Fleming and the
Fleming Locomotive Company. Mr. Fleming had rebuilt #18 during 2006, and had been using the engine for excursions on the Mount Hood railroad. However, rising costs made the operation financially impractical, so the 18 and sister 20 were sold to the San Luis & Rio Grande. On 17-Dec-2007, crews loaded the two onto a pair of heavy duty (8 axle) KRL flatcars for the trip to Alamosa, CO. The two tenders were loaded onto a third flat - ITTX 930818.

The set did not leave Hood River until 27-Dec-2007, when they were picked up by Union Pacific and taken to The Dalles, OR. From there, they'd travel to Hinkle Yard, OR, then to Provo, UT, and eventually Winter Park, CO, before being turned back to Provo for a trip via Wyoming to Denver.

Not too often you see a steam engine suspended in mid-air.

That's about far enough - note the flatcar in the background that will be rolled in under the unit.

And this is how the units are secured to the deck - little welded blocks to hold the drivers in place, and then chained to the deck
