DRGW.Net | D&RG Class 60 / D&RGW C-16 Class Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotives

The Class 60 / Class C-16 narrow gauge consolidations are quite possibly the most confusing of the D&RG locomotive classes. To start with, the class was built by two different manufacturers. Units 200-227 were built by the Grant Locomotive Works of New Jersey, and 228-295 were built by Baldwin. During the D&RG era, several of the Baldwin units were sold to the Rio Grande Western in Utah, who changed the ones they bought to standard gauge several years later. More confusingly, the RGW converted one back to narrow gauge for a year, then back to standard gauge again. All of the RGW units wound up on logging railroads, and thus it's difficult to ascertain if any survive or not, as their final dispositions are not known.

Today, at least three examples of the class survive:

Notes:

¹ This D&RGW is the Denver & Rio Grande Western that existed in Utah in the 1880s, not the one existing after the 1921 reorganization of the D&RG.

² FL&C is Fitzhugh, Luther & Co.

³ The final fates of D&RG 287 (RGW 104/RGW 6), D&RG 289 (RGW 106/RGW 7), D&RG 290 (RGW 107/RGW 9), D&RG 291 (RGW 108/RGW 4), and D&RG 295 (RGW 110/RGW 10) are somewhat in dispute. Don Strack claims that all were sold to Fitzhugh, Luther & Co. during the last half of 1903. Bruce Metcalf and the RGMHS roster show the following dispositions: D&RG 287: Sold to the Blacksoler-Miller Lumber Railroad, then the Brewton Iron Works, and finally the Lindsay Lumber & Export Co. by Sep-1920. D&RG 289: Sold to the Livingston Lumber RR and later the Walker Co. Lumber RR. D&RG 290: Sold to the Lester Mill Co. Railroad. D&RG 291: Sold to the Red Cypress Lumber RR. D&RG 295: Sold to the Natalbany Lumber Co. RR. I don't have any evidence one way or the other, and it's possible that FL&C was an intermediary broker between the two.

⁴ RGW 8, which started life as D&RG narrow gauge 2-8-0 #290, was converted to standard gauge to work the Rio Grande Western. However, with the RGW's acquisition of the Utah Central in 1899, they needed narrow gauge power. So, the RGW 8 was re-narrowed during Oct-1899 to work the ex-UC Salt Lake - Park City line. Somewhere during 1900, the unit was converted back to standard gauge service as RGW 8.
