Signals on the D&RGW

The Grande preferred signaling gear from the General Railway Signal Company.

GRS Type D Signals

From the first installations of signals on the Grande in the 1920s through the mid-to-late 1930s, the Grande used GRS Type D three-light vertical signals. While originally these came with just individual hoods over the lenses, at some point the Grande implemented a large hood that covered the entire face of the signal. This helped signal visibility in harsh sunlight and helped keep snow off the signal face.

GRS Type SA Signals

In the mid-to-late 1930s, the Rio Grande switched their standard signals from Type D to GRS Type SA searchlights.

Joint Line ATSF Signals

On Rio Grande sections of the Joint Line?, the Type SA was the standard signal. For Santa Fe sections (including the TCS/CTC points at South Denver and Bragdon), however, the signals were primarily US&S H-5 searchlights.
