Locations along the D&RGW Locations along the Rio Grande Junction Niger, CO Wreck of D&RGW Train 6 at Niger - 12 Dec 1934

At 0710h on 12 Dec 1934, the eastbound Panoramic (D&RGW Train 6) with DRGW 1700 on the front struck a large boulder while rounding a curve on the main line at Niger, CO.

1700 landed on its side in the Colorado River, killing the engineer and fireman. The engineer was Allan W. Young, 58, of Pueblo and the fireman was Jay A. McDougal, 37, of Grand Junction. (from the Aspen Daily Times, 13 Dec 1934, page 1, and Steamboat Pilot, 21 Dec 1934, page 7)
