The flatirons below Eldorado Mt have long provided a dramatic exit from South Boulder Creek Canyon. Here an eastbound manifest pops out of Tunnel 2 as it approaches the west switch of Plain siding on a snowy February morning in 1974.
D&RGW 3101 is seen here with the 3129 and another unidentified GP40(-2). It's just west of Pinecliff with this manifest, crossing the small bridge just after the South Beaver Creek Road crossing. Taken in August, 1975.
An interesting mix of four axle power leads an eastbound load across the East Portal Road viaduct just below East Portal in July, 1974. Todays consist finds the 3006 leading 3049, 3023, 3052 and the 3103. This is the same train as seen in the next view.
Here's something that we'll never see again - a loaded coal train with two GP30's, a GP35, a GP40 and a GP40-2 on the front. Lead by DRGW 3006, this train makes its way downgrade just east of Pinecliff in July of 1974.
