Jim,

Thanks for the very interesting recap of DUS history!

In my case the timeframe is mid-60's to late 70's. The DUS scene is high a=
nd narrow with just 2 depot tracks straddling a 7' long platform model. Th=
e platform roof coupled with the elevation will effective obscure much of t=
he ground level view of the depot itself anyway. Right now I put one of th=
e wide photos taken during the recent construction up as a 7' long temporar=
y placeholder. Putting the much skyline being incorrect for the modeled er=
a aside, it really looks pretty decent. Adding a couple building facades a=
nd/or photos generously provided by members of this list will make it a ver=
y nice scene.

know?

As they say, it depends on when. 1950s & 1960s photos do show standing seam=
metal roofing with copper green patina, while 1970s & 1980s photos show si=
lver. Currently it looks dark brown or charcoal grey.

And getting back to Robin=E2=80=99s original question seeking a photo of th=
e west elevation for a backdrop, again, it very much depends on when.=20

I=E2=80=99ve been studying photos of the depot from when it was built in 18=
80 to see how the west facade changed over time.

As built in 1880 the depot consisted of just the center section with the or=
nate peaked clock tower, flanked by two-section, two-story wings at each en=
d. Before the fire of 1894 low single story wings had been added at both en=
ds for handling baggage and express.

The depot was rebuilt using the original stone walls but got a new clock to=
wer, and a simplified roof line with dormers in the flanking sections. A wi=
de shed roof was also added along the entire length of the west facdade, in=
cluding the low baggage wings.=20=20

The center section was torn down in 1914 and replaced with the current Beau=
x Arts style central hall. During the rebuilding the adjacent two-story win=
gs to either side were shortened slightly to accommodate a wider center sec=
tion, dropping from 9 windows to 8 on the north, and from 10 windows to 9 o=
n the south. The low baggage and express extensions remained at both ends. =
The shed roof was removed at the center section and replaced with an enclos=
ed flat roof canopy. By the 1950s the shed roof to the north and south was =
also extended outward and enclosed, and remained that way into the 1980s.=20

At some point the north end express extension was enlarged by wrapping the =
shed roof around the north end. Sometime in the 1980s the southern portion =
of the shed roof was removed, and the low extension at the south end was to=
rn down.

So what does this mean for Robin=E2=80=99s photo of the west facade? From c=
irca 1894 until crica 1989 no unobstructed photo of the west facade was pos=
sible. The view was always obstructed by a shed roof, an enclosed shed, an =
enclosed waiting area, or platform roofs. The unobstructed views taken duri=
ng the modern reconstruction are an anomaly, not the norm.
