This won't help the basic 'what color' conversation very much, as the hist=
oric samples are generally not available to see. If there may be a source =
that can be carefully sanded to find the 'original' layer of paint; that co=
uld be a way to solve the problem. The Smithsonian does this when restorin=
g old aircraft.

When I used to wander the rail yards and look at colors, I had with me a co=
lor chart from my favorite model paint company. I used that chart to compa=
re the color on a car/engine with available paint colors and note the close=
st color and what the variance was -- needing more red or whatever. I did =
this under daylight conditions. When not in use, I kept the chart in a dar=
k location -- in a closed binder -- to avoid any fading or color shifts.

Most of the commercial model railroad paint companies make available color =
charts for their paint lines. You can find them online and purchase one. =
You can also find many varieties of Pantone color samples online. This is =
one that may be useful: https://www.pantone.com/starter-guide-solid-coated=
-uncoated ;=20

If you manage to find a car or engine color area or source that you think i=
s what you want to copy, using a color chart in the field will help.
